“Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) chamou de “Abominável Mistério” o surgimento, rápida diversificação e dominância das Angiospermas no registro fóssil. A explicação encontrada por Darwin foi de que a origem das angiospermas teria sido restrita geograficamente com uma rápida expansão. Contudo, ele próprio considerou tal hipótese conjecturalmente pobre. Uma hipótese alternativa foi proposta por Louis Charles Joseph Gaston de Saporta (1823– 1895): um conjunto de eventos evolutivos de interações entre angiospermas e insetos teria um papel central na rápida diversificação das angiospermas no Jurássico. A hipótese de Gaston de Saporta foi confirmada, posteriormente, pela ampliação do conhecimento sobre o registro fóssil e por estudos moleculares. A fantástica diversificação dos insetos e angiospermas atuais devese, em grande parte, a um padrão de etapas evolutivas graduais. A evidência geral sugere que, em parte, a evolução conduziu os insetos e as plantas a cobrirem o globo atual”.
