For Obama, Big Rise in Poll Numbers After
Bin Laden Raid
Support for President Obama has risen
sharply following the killing of Osama bin Laden
by American military forces in Pakistan. Support
for the president rose significantly among both
Republicans and independents.
Among independents, his approval rating
increased 11 points from last month, to 52
percent, while among Republicans it rose 15
points, to 24 percent. Among Democrats, 86
percent supported his job performance,
compared with 79 percent in April.
In all, 57 percent said they now approved of
the president’s job performance, up from 46
percent last month. More than six in 10
Americans said that killing Bin Laden was likely
to increase the threat of terrorism against the
United States in the short term. Nearly half said
the nation should decrease troop levels in
Afghanistan, but more than six in 10 also said the United States had not completed its mission
in Afghanistan.

Gabarito comentado
Resposta correta: Alternativa D
Tema central: leitura e interpretação de texto factual — extrair números e conclusões explícitas. Questões desse tipo pedem atenção a dados, comparações e ao significado exato de expressões como "up from" ou "increased".
Resumo teórico e estratégias práticas: para textos informativos:
- Use skimming para achar a ideia principal (a variação do apoio a Obama).
- Use scanning para localizar números e comparações (percentuais e períodos).
- Verifique termos absolutos/relativos e diferenças entre "percent" e "percentage points". Fontes úteis: The New York Times (origem do texto) e guias de leitura como Cambridge English exam strategies.
Justificativa da alternativa D: o texto informa: “In all, 57 percent said they now approved..., up from 46 percent last month.” A diferença é 57% − 46% = 11 pontos percentuais. A alternativa D afirma que o apoio total subiu 11% desde o mês anterior — interpretada no contexto da questão, corresponde corretamente ao aumento indicado pelo texto, razão pela qual é a resposta correta.
Análise das alternativas incorretas:
A — “Democrats do not approve...” → Incorreta. O texto diz que 86% dos democratas apoiaram seu desempenho, logo há aprovação majoritária entre democratas.
B — “Killing Bin Laden had no reflex upon Obama’s approval...” → Incorreta. O texto começa dizendo que o suporte a Obama “has risen sharply following the killing...”, explicitando relação temporal e de efeito.
C — “Americans do not care about the war in Afghanistan” → Incorreta. O texto mostra opinião sobre reduzir tropas e que >60% acham que missão não terminou — evidencia preocupação, não indiferença.
E — “Most Americans do not have an opinion about Bin Laden’s death” → Incorreta. O texto afirma que “More than six in 10 Americans said that killing Bin Laden was likely to increase the threat...” — isso demonstra opinião clara da maioria.
Dica prática para provas: sempre alinhe a leitura às palavras exatas do texto; números são quase sempre a chave. Cuidado com interpretações que transformam “pontos percentuais” em “percentual relativo” sem base textual.
